    TOP 5 BAD HABITS TO AVOID FOR BAD TEETH

    INTRODUCTION

    Do you have bad dental habits that you aren’t even aware of?  While brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining clean and strong teeth, other everyday actions can gradually damage your smile. At Locust Family Dentistry, we want you to know which habits can hurt your oral health so you can take better care of your teeth.

    Some habits may seem harmless, but can actually lead to serious dental problems over time. These include weakening tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay or gum disease, and even causing damage to your jaw. Talking to a dentist can help you identify and change these habits. Luckily, knowing what to avoid is the first step toward protecting your teeth.

    For a healthier grin, you should refrain from the following five negative habits:

    1.1 SKIPPING DENTAL CHECKUPS

    Many people don’t visit the dentist until there’s a problem. But regular dental checkups are important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Going to the dentist twice a year helps catch problems early, like cavities or gum infections, and keeps your teeth clean through professional cleanings.

    1.2 BITING YOUR NAILS

    Nail biting can damage your teeth. It puts extra pressure on them, which can lead to chips, cracks, or wear over time. Plus, your fingers carry germs, which can lead to infections inside your mouth. If you struggle with this habit, try using bitter-tasting nail polish or finding ways to manage stress, such as deep breathing or keeping your hands busy.

    1.3 USING YOUR NAILS AS A TOOTH

    Do you ever use your teeth to open a bottle or tear plastic packaging? Using your teeth for purposes other than chewing can result in cracks or damaged teeth, even if it might seem like a quick remedy.  Always use the right equipment, such as bottle openers or scissors, rather than risking your teeth.

    1.4 EATING TOO MANY ACIDIC OR SUGARY FOODS

    Cavities can result from eating a diet heavy in sugar or acidic foods, such as soda, candies, or citrus fruits.  To keep your teeth strong, limit these foods and eat a balanced diet with foods rich in calcium and vitamins. Chewing sugar-free gum or drinking water after meals can also lessen damage.

    1.5 GRINDING OR CLENCHING TEETH

    Many people grind their teeth while sleeping or when stressed, which is known as bruxism. This behavior can lead to tooth decay, jaw discomfort, and even tooth cracking. If you wake up with a sore jaw or notice tooth sensitivity, talk to your dentist. They could advise you to sleep with a night guard on.

     

    TIPS FOR HEALTHIER TEETH

    To protect your teeth, start by being aware of these harmful habits. Replace them with healthier choices, like using stress relief techniques, eating a tooth-friendly diet, and maintaining a daily routine of brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. Don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly to keep your smile healthy and strong!
